Michigan’s Six-Week Wonder

Riveridge sweet cherries come from 10 family orchards across West Michigan. Harvest runs just six weeks, kicking off around the Fourth of July. Hand-picked with stems intact, our cherries deliver the firm bite, deep red color, and balanced sweetness only a Michigan summer can grow.

What Makes Them Special

Hand-picked.
Worth the wait.

The same conditions that make West Michigan ideal for apples create the perfect environment for sweet cherries: Lake Michigan’s weather-moderating influence, nutrient-rich soil, and warm summer days. Cherries are the first fruit to bloom each spring, drawing bees into the orchards around Mother’s Day.

Our cherries come from 10 family-owned orchards spanning southwest Michigan, the Ridge, and up to the Leelanau Peninsula. The strains we grow are prized for their firm bite, rich red color, and juicy balance of sweet and tangy flavors.

Every cherry is hand-picked with the stem intact, helping seal in freshness from orchard to retailer to your kitchen.

West Michigan’s lake-moderated climate, fertile soils, and established agricultural ecosystems across SW Michigan, the Ridge, and Leelanau produce cherries with the firm bite and balanced flavor retailers prefer.

Packed Fresh, Fast

Hand-picked cherries move from orchard to our packing line within hours. Automated equipment fills pouches and clamshells without bruising the fruit, and stems stay on to seal in moisture.

Cherry Cold Packing Line

Cold-Chain Delivered

Cherries hold their crunch only as long as the cold chain holds. Our facilities maintain consistent temps from packing through shipping, and Midwest delivery means days fewer in transit than west-coast fruit.

Keep Them Fresh

Storage tips.

Refrigerate immediately. Store cherries in the coldest part of your fridge, ideally in their original container or a perforated bag.

Keep stems on. Stems intact extend shelf life and prevent moisture loss. Don’t pull them off until you’re ready to eat.

Eat within 1-2 weeks. Fresh cherries are at their best in the first week, but properly stored will hold for up to 14 days.

Freeze for year-round use. Pit, spread on a tray to freeze individually, then transfer to a bag. Great for smoothies, baking, and sauces.

Cherry FAQ

Cherry questions, answered.

Everything retailers and consumers ask about Michigan sweet cherries.

When are Michigan sweet cherries in season?

Michigan sweet cherry harvest runs about six weeks, kicking off around the Fourth of July and wrapping up by mid-August. July is the only guaranteed time to enjoy fresh Michigan-grown sweet cherries. Exact timing varies year to year and by region, with southwest Michigan typically harvesting first and the Leelanau Peninsula finishing last.

Where are Riveridge sweet cherries grown?

Our cherries come from 10 family-owned orchards spanning three Michigan growing regions: southwest Michigan, the Fruit Ridge north of Grand Rapids, and the Leelanau Peninsula in northwest Michigan. The mix of growing areas extends our harvest window and gives retailers consistent supply throughout July.

What makes Michigan sweet cherries different from west coast cherries?

Michigan’s lake-moderated climate, cooler nights, and shorter season produce cherries with a distinct firm bite and balanced sweet-tangy flavor. Buying Michigan also reduces cross-country trucking, which is better for the environment and keeps fruit fresher because it spends less time in transit.

Why are some cherry orchards covered with netting or row covers?

Three reasons: row covers protect spring blossoms from late frosts, bird netting deters birds during ripening, and rain covers prevent fruit splitting from heavy summer rains right at harvest. These tools are why Michigan can grow cherries reliably despite weather challenges other regions don’t face.

Why are sweet cherries hand-picked with the stem on?

Stems intact seal in moisture and extend shelf life by up to a week. Hand-picking also prevents the bruising that mechanical harvesters cause, which is critical because cherry skin is delicate and any damage shortens shelf life dramatically.

How long do fresh sweet cherries last?

Stored properly in the coldest part of your refrigerator with stems intact, fresh cherries hold for one to two weeks. Don’t wash them until you’re ready to eat. Keep them in the original container or a perforated bag to prevent moisture buildup.

Can I freeze sweet cherries?

Yes. Pit them, spread on a baking sheet to freeze individually, then transfer to a freezer bag. Frozen cherries hold their flavor and texture for up to 12 months and work great in smoothies, baked goods, sauces, and homemade ice cream.

Are sweet cherries good for you?

Sweet cherries pack 16% of your daily Vitamin C and 12% of your daily fiber per cup, plus antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, potassium, magnesium, melatonin, and calcium. They’re naturally fat-free and cholesterol-free.

What pack sizes are available for retailers?

Riveridge offers consumer packs in 1 lb clamshells, 2 lb pouches and clamshells, and 2.25 lb pouches. Bulk programs are available in 8 lb and 20 lb formats, with custom options for larger volume buyers. Visit our Retailer Hub for complete spec sheets and PLU information.

What are the sweetest cherry varieties?

Michigan growers select cherry strains specifically for the firm bite, deep red color, and balanced sweet-tangy flavor that retailers and consumers want. Specific variety selection varies by orchard and harvest week, but every Riveridge cherry meets the same flavor and quality standard before it ships.

Where can I buy Michigan sweet cherries?

Riveridge sweet cherries are available at major retailers across the Midwest during July. Use our cherry locator to find Michigan cherries near you during the season. Outside of July, look for frozen Michigan cherries or check back next summer.

Why is Michigan sweet cherry acreage growing?

Demand for Michigan-grown cherries is outpacing supply. Cherry acreage in Michigan has grown at a double-digit pace in recent years and is expected to continue. Local production reduces the environmental cost of trucking fruit from the western United States and keeps prices more stable for consumers.
