Apple FAQ
Apple questions, answered
The questions retailers and consumers ask most.
Which apples are sweetest?
Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala, and Ambrosia top the sweetness scale. Honeycrisp leads with bright, balanced sweetness, while Fuji is known for dense sugar and long storage. Gala offers mild, crowd-pleasing sweetness perfect for snacking.
What apples are best for pies?
Rome, Jonagold, and Ida Red are classic baking apples because they hold their shape under heat and balance sweet with tart. Many bakers blend two or three varieties for the best flavor and texture.
What apple is most like Honeycrisp?
EverCrisp is a Honeycrisp x Fuji cross with similar crunch and sweetness, plus longer storage. SnapDragon and Ambrosia are also strong stand-ins if you love that crisp, juicy bite.
When are Michigan apples in season?
Michigan apple harvest runs late August through early November. Early varieties like Paula Red and Ginger Gold come first, mid-season brings Gala and Honeycrisp, and late varieties like Pink Lady and EverCrisp finish out the season. Cold storage extends availability through May.
What apple stores the longest?
Pink Lady, EverCrisp, and Braeburn are champion keepers, holding their crunch and flavor for months in proper cold storage. These late-harvest varieties are why fresh Michigan apples are available well into spring.
Which apples are best for cider?
Cider blends typically combine sweet, tart, and aromatic varieties. Ida Red, Jonathan, and McIntosh add tartness and depth, while Gala and Golden Delicious bring sweetness. Riveridge presses cider from a custom blend of our own apples.
