Red Delicious is instantly recognizable for its elongated shape and distinctive “toothy” lobes, an image that’s long been held up as the classic American apple. Discovered in Iowa in the 1880s, it rose to fame after winning a contest to identify America’s favorite apple.
Mildly sweet, Red Delicious has a deep crimson skin and crisp, juicy flesh. It’s also an excellent storage apple, which helps explain its popularity for export, it can hold up well through long journeys to faraway markets.
Most often enjoyed as a grab-and-go snack, Red Delicious also works nicely in salads or diced for a fresh apple salsa.
